How to configure data source extension

To add data connectors such as Web API, JSON, XML, and OData to the Bold Reports^® ASP.NET Core Report Designer, install the BoldReports.Data.WebData NuGet package and register the extension assembly in the Startup method. The Report Designer application provides only the following data connectors as built-in data sources.

Other data connectors, such as Web API, JSON, XML, and OData, are provided as separate NuGet packages. Follow these steps to register and connect with these data connectors in the Report Designer application.

Create Report Designer ASP.NET Core application

To create a Report Designer ASP.NET Core application, follow Add Report Designer to an ASP.NET Core application.

How do I install a data source extension in the ASP.NET Core Report Designer?

To add data connectors such as Web API, JSON, XML, and OData to the Bold Reports^® ASP.NET Core Report Designer, install the NuGet package for the connector you need in the application.

Based on the required data connector, install the respective NuGet package in the Report Designer application. The following table lists the NuGet package for each data connector.

For example, to register and load web data sources in the application install BoldReports.Data.WebData package in the application.

Right-click the project or solution in the Solution Explorer tab, and choose Manage NuGet Packages. Alternatively, select the Tools > NuGet Package Manager > Manage NuGet Packages for Solution menu command.

Search for BoldReports.Data.WebData NuGet package, and install it in your application.

BoldReports.Data.WebData installs into your application. Click OK. The assembly is then added to the respective project references.

Register web data source extension in application startup

1. Open the code-behind file Startup.cs and add the following using statement.

       using BoldReports.Web;

2. Add the following code to register the extension assembly in the Startup method.

       public Startup(IConfiguration configuration, IWebHostEnvironment _hostingEnvironment)
       {
           //Use the below code to register extensions assembly into report designer
           ReportConfig.DefaultSettings = new ReportSettings().RegisterExtensions(new List<string> { "BoldReports.Data.WebData" });
   
           Configuration = configuration;
           env = _hostingEnvironment;
       }

To register multiple data extensions in the application, provide the assembly names as a list of strings.

Connect with data

1. Launch the Report Designer application. Click the Data icon in the configuration panel to open a Data configuration panel.
2. Click on the NEW DATA button in DATA panel.
3. In list of connection types, you can find Web API, OData, JSON, and XML connection types.
